Encouraging reuse in the Berkeley community

About myReusables

Our mission is helping people conserve resources through reuse.

We created this website to help people recycle, reuse and make the most out of the resources we all share as a community. It's new, and its a work in progress... please look for improvements each week and give us feedback to help improve. We are open to any suggestions that support our mission.

FAQ

Q: What are the "Free Items"?

A: It's pretty simple... if you are getting rid of something you create a listing letting people know it is available.  If you are looking for something you create a listing describing what you want.  Once two parties are interested in exchanging an item the website helps them arrange a hand-off.  People that have swapped items can rate the interaction and build a reputation score so others know they are reliable.

Q: Can I also sell items or do I have to give them away?

A: The "Free Items" have to be free.  We think charging for items adds a barrier to encouraging reuse and there are already plenty of sites that handle selling items very well.

Q: Do the "Garage Sales" have to include free items?

A: No. In the spirit of encouraging reuse, anybody can list a community sale (garage sales, yard sales, rumage sales, etc.) We provide the sale listings and maps to make finding a local sale a little easier.

Q: How much does this cost?

A: It's free!

Q: How do you make money?

A: We don't.  We plan on donating some free time and a little money to provide this service for others. If the expense of running the site exceeds our ability to donate, we will try to support the website through donations from the community.

Q: What about my privacy?

A: We only collect information necessary to help you exchange items and we will not sell your private information to anybody.  Your e-mail address and identity will be concealed from others unless you choose to share it.

Q: Isn't there a service that already does this?

A: There are other services that help people recycle and reuse items, and we encourage you to use them as well!  We want to make the recycling and reuse process as easy as possible but most importantly, we want recycling / reuse to happen.  If this is not the best service for you, please let us know what we can do to become the best.

Q: Can I help in any way?

A: Sure! The easiest thing you can do is simply use the site and help others reuse. If you happen to have skills with web design, we could certainly use somebody with some CSS skills to make the site easier to use.

Q: Where are you located?

A: We're in Berkeley!
